Two Terms is Enough!

Alameda resident and closet Republican Mike McMahon is running for his third term as Alameda Unified School District Trustee…

Two terms is enough!

He caused Measure E to fail!

Three McMahon family members employed by AUSD is a conflict of interest!

Mike McMahon is the reason Measure E lost. His incompetence and arrogance would not allow for reasonable input to correct the mistakes and basic unfairness in Measure H. Measure E, like Measure H, taxed small homes the same as large homes. Small businesses were taxed at the rate of 15 cents per square foot but large businesses, like shopping centers, were taxed at the rate of 1/2 cent per square foot. Mike McMahon refused to address this basic unfairness. As a result, Measure E was structured just like Measure H, ensuring its defeat. Because of Mike McMahon, AUSD is planning school closures next year in the wake of Measure E’s defeat.

Mike McMahon is telling Alameda residents not to give their money to Alameda’s children via their PTAs, but instead to give it to APLUS, which spent $90,000 on the Measure E campaign, and lost.

Mike McMahon failed to enforce the rule of law. Whether one agreed with or opposed the LGBT anti-bullying program known as Lesson 9, the public hearings egregiously violated the school board’s own process and basic fairness. Mike McMahon was chairman/president of the Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees, ran the public meetings, was repeatedly informed of these violations but did nothing to stop them. This caused unnecessary bitter division in our community and created a circus atmosphere at these public hearings. Mike McMahon must be held to account.

Mike McMahon has been dishonest with Alameda’s voters since first elected. Mike McMahon was a long time Republican who lost 3 school board elections. McMahon then re-registered as a Democrat to inappropriately win the endorsement of the local Democratic Party. Yet, while accepting that endorsement, he publicly stated he voted for George W. Bush for president and was intending to vote for the Republican candidate for governor, Bill Simon. On discovering this, the local Democratic Party removed their endorsement.

Has Mike McMahon ever been honest with the public about where he stands? No. He refuses to take public positions on important matters before the board nor is he willing to meet with community representatives to discuss controversial issues.

Alameda’s Mayor and City Council members have term limits of two terms. The President of the United States is limited to two terms in office. However, when the school board charter was re-written – including McMahon’s handiwork – term limits for school board members was left out. McMcahon claimed that this was a mistake. Nonetheless, Mike McMahon has never tried to correct this “mistake” and now he is exploiting this by running for his third term on the school board. Two terms is enough!

There are three of McMahon’s family members on the Alameda Unified School District payroll. Mike McMahon sees nothing wrong with this, and he sees no conflict of interest.

Following the passage of Lesson 9, there was an attempted recall of the 3 school board members who supported it. Every local elected official, except two, opposed the recall. Mike McMahon was one of those two.
